Lockpicking skill will increase your chance of opening locks without breaking a lockpick. Lockpicks can be obtained in a few ways. One of which is bought from merchants and another is found in loot in chests and/or dead bodies of those you've killed. Each skill point put into this category increases your chances of opening a lock on a door or chest successfully.
