A General History of the Most Notorious Pyrates of Antaloor and Their Exploits

Sazarius Templeton, the Count of Chaledee, alias Captain Gadfly.

One of the most notorious cutthroats of Antaloor was Sazarius Templeton, heir to the respected family of the same name from Chaledee - whom, it seemed, people would, officially know from that day on as the noble Seventeenth Count of Chaledee - yet who actually would in time earn the world-infamous moniker of dread pirate Captain Gadfly.

Already as a young man the count showed a keenness for swordplay, and being from the highly respected circle of Chaledean aristocracy (his family's manor grounds held their own private span of coast), he would oft entertain himself with boat trips and sea cruises, on which he would be taken by his uncle Mortimer. It was during one of such excursions that the two Chaledees supposedly happened across a skirmish in which a navy ship had cornered the sloop of then small-time privateer Red Petrov, and proceeded to commandeer the pirate's vessel. Young Sazarius was supposedly enthralled by the spectacle laid bare before his eyes, especially when Petrov's men managed to push the sailors off their own deck and succeed in their escape. Unfortunately for Red Petrov, the old codger was discovered in a tavern not three months later by an outfit of elite sailors who showed up to watch the evening's household fights, whence Petrov promptly shat himself and submitted before being hanged for his crimes from a lamp post outside.

The battle on the high seas, though watched from a great distance, was likely Sazarius's first encounter with piracy. As a rather hot-tempered young man, he was groomed for the life of any proper gentleman of his station, that is, a military school first, and then a distinguished career in the military. However, the encounter with Red Petrov must have left a mark on the impressionable young mind, as time would show.

[The story of Captain Templeton should be continued here, but the book has been badly damaged by seawater and the remaining pages of the volume are missing. Perhaps the rest of the account still exists, somewhere...]
